SENIOR LIBRARIAN
FULL PAY RANGE $4,141 - $5,840 PER MONTH

Duties include advising and assisting library patrons; reviewing new publications and selecting materials for acquisition or disposition; instructing patrons in the use of electronic resources; and supervising library staff. Possession of a Master of Library Science degree from an American Library Association accredited college or university and three years public library experience, as well as one year supervisory experience, are required. Previous experience in adult and children’s librarianship, including public speaking, preferred. Bilingual (English / Spanish) skills beneficial. Hours will vary and include evenings and weekends.

PUBLIC RELATIONS ASSISTANT
FULL PAY RANGE $3,575 - $5,045 PER MONTH
DEPARTMENT: CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU
Duties include promoting the City of Irving as a travel destination through the media and community relations programs – developing and implementing media strategies for traditional and 2.0 media, including press releases, blogs, story pitches and press tours; serving as a liaison to Irving’s hotels and the hospitality community; and representing ICVB and the City at local organization, community and committee events. Duties also include researching and developing media contacts, destination profiles, and editorial and event calendars; monitoring user-generated content; and maintaining related databases. A Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, in communications, journalism or marketing, and a minimum of two years of experience in public relations, journalism, advertising or marketing are required; travel industry and public relations agency experience a plus. Must have strong writing, editing and pitching skills; proven track record for building and maintaining media relationships that yield results; speech writing and 2.0 media client messaging experience; knowledge of current media and industry trends; and a valid Texas driver’s license. Must also have knowledge of graphics programs, including Adobe inDesign and PowerPoint, as well as blog software and content management systems. Experience with industry software, including CRM systems, desirable. Must be able to travel periodically and work some evenings and weekends. If and when requested, a (non-returnable) brief writing sample must be provided.

This position is assigned to the bookmobile, so must have, or be able to obtain, Texas Class B CDL. Hours may vary and include evenings and weekends. Clerical and typing test may be required.

Duties include receiving and dispatching emergency calls from citizens requesting police service; maintaining contact with police field units; entering, updating and retrieving information from teletype networks; and providing assistance in taking reports over the telephone. Hours include three shifts covering a 24-hour period. A high school diploma or equivalent and two years experience in Computer Aided Dispatch, 911 or similar police-related area required. Clerical and typing tests may be required. Typing speed of 50 wpm or better preferred. All applicants will be subject to a criminal history check. A conviction for Class B misdemeanor and above is disqualifying.

Duties include issuing building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, fire and multi-family permits; calculating and processing permit fees; reviewing plans for fences, signs, pools, etc.; conferring with other departments in regard to plan review, permit issuance and utilities services; conducting research; maintaining related databases, records and files; and handling requests for information and complaints pertaining to permits, code / zoning and certificates of occupancy. Duties also include answering the phone and assisting with other general clerical tasks. A high school diploma or equivalent and two years of customer service experience are required; building methods blueprint reading experience preferred. Bilingual (English /Spanish) skills beneficial. METER READER (PART-TIME)
FULL PAY RANGE $12.06 - $17.01 PER HOUR

Duties include operating meter-reading vehicles; reading various types of water meters on assigned routes and recording readings on hand-held computers; inspecting meters and reporting water leakage and other defects to the supervisor; and completing service orders for re-reads or lid / box maintenance. Duties will require walking for extended periods of time in various types of weather and lifting up to 40 pounds frequently. A high school diploma or equivalent and a good driving record are required. No previous experience is necessary. Must have, or be able to obtain, a valid Class C Texas driver’s license. Schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to noon. Meter reader test may be required.

Duties include performing lifeguarding tasks as required by certifying agencies; conducting instructional programs; and providing assistance with pool chemical monitoring and facility cleaning. Duties may require lifting up to 50 pounds frequently. Must be at least 16 to be hired, be able to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance, and have six months lifeguarding experience. Current Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR certification required. Must also have, or obtain within three months from date of hire, AED, O2 and disease transmission prevention certificates. Duties include holding signs or displaying hand / arm signals and blowing a whistle to control traffic; and escorting school children and other pedestrians safely across various streets and intersections. Duties will require working outdoors under a variety of weather conditions. Must have formal or informal education or training which insures the ability to communicate in English at a level necessary for successful job performance. No experience is required, but must have basic knowledge of traffic laws and safety procedures. Schedule and hours coincide with the Irving Independent School District schedule – will be scheduled to work during the months school is in session and hours will occasionally vary to accommodate early dismissal days.

Duties include collecting refuse, brush and debris and transporting it to the City landfill. Must be able to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance and have one year experience driving any vehicle that requires a Class A or B driver’s license to operate. Must currently possess a Class A or B driver’s license with CDL endorsement. Hours are 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. four days per week. Assignment may continue until approximately September 30, 2009, but there is potential for progression to regular full-time employment.
